What are signs of depression?
Hopelessness , depressed mood, listlessness and their negative thoughts - if these feelings last for several weeks or even months, a depressive phase can be the reason for this. Depression is now one of the most widespread mental illnesses in Germany. Between 4 and 5 million people are affected by this widespread disease.
Around one in four women and one in eight men will be affected by depression at some point in their lives. The disease depression differs greatly from person to person in terms of form, severity and course pattern, it has "many faces". Depression is often preceded by unspecific early symptoms, ie signs that could also point to various other diseases such as pain, fatigue, lack of energy, declining sexuality, apathy, insomnia and loss of appetite. These possible early symptoms can occur without a reason or as a reaction to stressful events and slowly develop into a depressive phase over weeks or months, more rarely overnight or a few days. The symptoms of the disease manifest themselves in very different ways. Depression usually manifests itself between the ages of 20 and 45. Depression is also more common in older people. Depression is the most common mental illness in seniors over the age of 65.
The emergence of a depression
There are many reasons why depression develops. In many cases, depression develops from the sum of pent-up frustrations and negative emotions. If people can no longer compensate for the extent of negative feelings and unresolved conflicts, the first signs of depressive moods often appear. If the person does not listen to their body in such a case, the symptoms worsen until a mild depressive episode ultimately develops into a moderate or even severe depression. Many depressed people continue to be burdened by traumatic experiences in their childhood. Even if these deep-seated negative feelings can be compensated for for a long time, they often result in depression in adulthood. This is almost always the case when additional emotional stress occurs that exceeds the personal stress limit.
A simplified example: If a child only receives recognition for performing a certain task, over time they will develop the feeling that they are not worth enough as a person. Later, this leads to an irrepressible desire to be recognized by other people. For example, the person concerned can develop a fixation on work, looking for confirmation through overtime to self-abandonment. The personal stress limit is often exceeded by a long way and a burn-out syndrome is the result, a special form of depression.
It is not uncommon for the causes of depression to be found in childhood. In adulthood, there are certain factors that ultimately trigger the disease. Apart from that, however, depression can also occur in an intact childhood: It is often considerable emotional stress, such as the death of a loved one, that can lead to an emotional imbalance. Nevertheless, depression is less common in people with happy childhoods than in people who suffered serious emotional injuries in their childhood.
